Active Directory consolidation and migration
Active Directory (AD) consolidation is the process by which two or more AD structures are combined into one integrated and effectively managed system.
Â
Consolidation can be implemented in different ways, depending on the specifics of the organization and the goals of the integration. Here are the key methods of AD consolidation:
- Trust Relationships (Trusts) - Establish trust relationships between domains or forests, allowing resources to be shared without full integration of structures. This can be a one- or two-sided trust, depending on requirements.
- Domain and resource migration - Moving users, groups, computers and other resources from one domain to another. This requires tools such as ADMT (Active Directory Migration Tool) and maintaining data integrity and permissions during the process.
- Standardization - Standardization of policies, processes and standards used across domains. This can include standardization of group policies (Group Policy), authorizations, management procedures and organizational unit (OU) structure.
- Modernization - Updating older, outdated AD domains or IT structures, introducing modern solutions in line with current business and technology needs. This often involves implementing new software versions and better security mechanisms.
AD consolidation can improve IT infrastructure management, reduce the complexity of the environment, and increase security and operational efficiency in the organization.
What does the process look like?
Preliminary analysis
In this phase, a key objective is to understand the current state of existing AD environments and identify requirements and consolidation goals.
Planning and design
At this stage, a detailed roadmap is created to address technical and business requirements. At the type stage, the appropriate approach is selected, such as resource migration, domain merging, establishing trust relationships or reorganizing forests.
Preparation of the environment
This stage includes specific activities to prepare the infrastructure for consolidation.
- Upgrading systems: Ensure that all domain controllers and AD servers are running compatible versions of operating systems and are updated accordingly
- Replication and synchronization: Ensure that all data in existing domains are correctly replicated and synchronized before consolidation begins.
- Preparation of migration tools: Installation and configuration of migration tools, such as ADMT (Active Directory Migration Tool), and others required for moving data and testing the environment.
- Securing the environment: Conduct a security audit and make compliance and security fixes, if necessary, before consolidation begins.
- Backup: Perform a full backup of all key Active Directory servers and data to enable easy recovery if any issues arise.
Post-implementation testing and evaluation
At this stage, the performance of the consolidation/migration process is evaluated and possible reconfiguration is carried out to improve the system. After the verification, technical documentation with instructions for administrators is developed , which is then provided to the client.
