Regardless of how the collection is updated, every time an update occurs it requires the work of the SMS_COLLECTION_EVALUATOR component service. Possible irregularities in the operation of this service are not very obvious, although they sometimes manifest themselves in the persistence of collection icons with an hourglass (they do not respond to the Refresh command).
We can check any suspicions about the collection update service using the CEViewer (Collection Evaluator Viewer) tool located in the "CM administrator's toolbox," that is, in the ToolsServerTools directory inside the Configuration Manager (Site Server) installation directory.
After launching the program, you need to connect to the Site Server.
Then you can see information on updating by schedule (Full Evaluation) or incremental (Incremental Evaluation).
It is quite interesting to see a percentage summary that shows the most "costly" updates. When this applies to some non-standard collection, it may indicate a suboptimally selected membership rule.
Collections that are shown in both Full and Incremental views have both update mechanisms enabled simultaneously.
The tool can also show update queues (if any).
However, the CEViewer program will not show the queue correctly when a collection with a misconstrued query triggers a service error, you can only see this in the colleval.log.
In this case, the error was provoked by the incorrect design of the WQL query, which cannot even be displayed:
Keeping in mind the limitations of the tool, it is worth remembering the existence of a program that provides information on updating the collection.
